Chapter 7

DEVELOPING PURITY

MUSCLES

IF YOU’RE ANYTHING like me and have ever made a resolution to get in shape, you know that getting into shape and being in shape are two different ends of the continuum. I go out the first day all enthusiastic, ready to do the amazing workout, giving it my all; only to wake up the next morning so sore that I am not able to get out of bed! But if I am able to keep this workout schedule over time, soon I get stronger, and I am not in pain every day. My muscles are able to handle more and more.

“Purity muscles” are like that too. The character of our kids needs to be strengthened to give them the incredible fortitude and strength they are going to need to stand strong against the godless principles of our culture today. For their sakes we should have a “purity workout schedule” in place while they are growing up.

We need to learn to work the different “muscle groups” in our children’s purity regimen. There are many ways that we can prepare our children for the future while they are yet naïve. This basic undergirding will enhance their ability to stand against the tide of culture when they reach adolescence. Intentional planning on our part will strengthen them to stand in the future.

AN IMAGE THAT REFLECTS GOD’S DESIGN

From the time your kids are very young, you must build strength into their self-image, gender, and body image. Let your children know how beautiful and handsome they are. This is critical in a culture that starts telling children when they’re young that they do not look right. Dads, on a regular basis remind your daughters how lovely God made them. The campaign that is expressly designed to negate our daughters’ self-image starts very early. Advertising is a major culprit in undermining their opinion about their outward image and appearance.

Teach your children early on that God knew perfectly well what He was doing by making a little girl or a little boy. We want to make an ongoing effort to build our children’s confidence in their gender. When you see your child acting in a way that affirms his or her gender, you can use it as an opportunity to validate God’s amazing design for that child’s life.

When you see your daughter all dressed up as a princess and having a tea party, you might interject, “Isn’t it wonderful that God made you such a beautiful little girl?” Or when you see your son dressed up as a pirate and climbing a tree, pretending it is the mast on a ship, you could say, “Isn’t it great that God made you such an adventuresome little boy?” Now, it goes without saying that many little girls climb trees and little boys love to have tea parties with their moms, but we can still affirm them as God made them. When you catch your children doing an activity that affirms their gender, by all means point it out periodically.
